Our California Elopement in Big Sur

If you've been wondering why I've been a little quiet lately, it's because I've been busy planning an elopement! My wonderful partner, Jon, and I, along with our family, whisked away to Big Sur California to tie the knot.

We stood on the seaside cliffs at Garrapata State Park to exchange vows with our immediate family. The calla lilies were in bloom, whales and sea otters played in the ocean waves behind us. Despite the salty drizzle and wind, the day couldn't have been more magical.

While planning a tiny elopement, I had second thoughts about going small. Would I miss the big elaborate party? Would people feel left out? Would it feel too small, and insignificant? I can confidently say, I wouldn't have done it any other way. Our day felt so special and so intimate. We got to have little moments with the people who mean the most to us and it truly felt like our special day. And most importantly, enjoy each other.

After our elopement, we hung around California for a bit to enjoy some of our favorite vacation spots. And as always, I took photos of beautiful things (there are SO many beautiful things) that I'm sure will inspire new artwork.

Hotel del Coronado
Hotel del Coronado

One of our favorite places to admire is the Hotel del Coronado. This historic hotel is a sight to behold along the beautiful Coronado island coastline. While the building has gone through many updates and changes since its founding in 1888, there's been a concerted effort to maintain much of its original charm.

While most people are busy admiring the grandiose chandeliers or signature red roof of the hotel, I'm snapping photos of the patterned carpet and wallpaper or vintage floral art prints. I consider it my personal mission to bring these stunning styles back in vogue.

Balboa Park

Another favorite spot of ours is Balboa Park and its stunning, endless gardens. I don't know if it's because the plants here are so different than the ones that grow in Minnesota, but I just can't get enough of the succulents and cacti. I could just wander about Balboa Park all day long.

There were so many beautiful plants and flowers, only some of which I could name, but certainly will inspire new patterns and art in the year ahead.

I hope to take a little time to recover from wedding planning and traveling! But I feel the itch to create and make beautiful things, bringing a little bit of California back home and hopefully to you soon!

xoxo,

Rachel
